About the Author
Professor emeritus of operations research at Stanford University. Dr. Hillier is especially known for his classic, award-winning text, Introduction to Operations Research, co-authored with the late Gerald J. Awesome problem solving tools

"Introduction to Operations Research" by Frederick Hillier and Gerald Lieberman
This is a tremendously powerful subject and this is an excellent treatment of the subject. The book is extensive and with the added chapters that you get access to online, there is a lot of great material.
Operations Research (OR) is a contemporary approach to solving really difficult, complicated problems in fields as diverse as finance, military operations, manufacturing, logistics, scientific problem solving, computer science and more. The field provides so many tools that can be used to solve a wide array of different problems.
This text is a very clear exposition of the subject and gives the reader very clear direction on the use of the OR tools most commonly used. The case studies are very clear, and while some are long and extend into multiple areas (the same or similar case study problems are used to explore different tools and some are built on previously used tools), they are very thorough.
I can't explain the entire breadth of OR in this review, but my favorite topics from this book are: Chapter 8: The Transportation and Assignment Problems, Chapter 10: Dynamic Programming, Chapter 11: Integer Programming, Chapter 14: Game Theory, Chapter 16: Markov Chains, and Chapter 20: Simulation.
The online chapters are also great and have provided me with significant material to occupy some DIY learning.

One of the first e-textbooks I have ever purchased, as well as used, for class.

Considering that this is not only one of the first times for me to own a book for school in electronic format but also my first set of Amazon reviews to make, I have simply critiqued this product on what it offers: a much-needed school supply at a more affordable price, financially and physically. All the needed material to study for upcoming assignments and exams appear to all be in it, and I have found some aspects of ebook use more convenient than the typical printed format. The lack of the final star is based mainly on the fact that, as with most other fields of study, this textbook only helps so much until a new edition for the same course comes along with a greater and more accurate amount of information. This will require consumers to purchase the newer copy and leave this one in the digital library collecting virtual dust. As long as the aforementioned does not come to pass, I still recommend this book to anyone else that still needs to use this edition as required by its related course.

Advanced Textbook

Very rich content. Excellent explanations taking the process step by step for the student. Presentation layer is a little poor for the OR Tutor on the online OR Courseware, which could use some improvement. One or more INFORMS article links on OR Courseware did not work. Readers must follow the directions in the text exactly in order to keep track of what to do next with OR Courseware supplements. OR Tutor's Tabular Simplex Method is informative. IOR Tutor is not very intuitive & takes a little bit of practice to understand how to use it. The presentation layer for OR Tutor is rather poor, while IOR Tutor's is average. This is truely a great book and the authors go into a lot of helpful detail in explaining concepts. It is an advanced book, with an abundance of cases and examples.
