Thermodynamics: An Engineering Approach Sixth Edition (SI Units), by Yunus A. Cengel, Michael A. Boles

This book moves students toward a clear understanding and a firm grasp of the basic principles of thermodynamics. It communicates directly with tomorrow's engineers in a simple yet precise manner that encourages creative thinking. This edition presents an early introduction to the First Law of Thermodynamics, and establishes a general understanding of energy, mechanisms of energy transfer, and the concept of energy balance, thermo-economics, and conversion efficiency. It features over 700 new homework problems which further enhance the extensive and diverse homework problem sets, and physical intuition to help students develop a sense of the underlying physical mechanisms and a mastery of solving practical problems that an engineer is likely to face in the real world. The title includes a free Student Resources DVD containing Limited Academic Version of EES (Engineering Equation Solver) software with scripted solutions to selected text problems, Physical experiments in thermodynamics with videos and complete write-ups of the experiments, as well as actual data, and an Interactive Thermodynamics Tutorial to reinforce student learning of thermodynamics concepts.

The Single Best Book on the Subject I Have Ever Read
By Jason Dowd
If you read only one book on Thermodynamics, make it this one.

I would strongly encourage students of science - whether physics, chemistry, or even biology and geology - to study this book before moving on to more specialized texts. This book is the best "big picture" book for Thermodynamics I have seen, and it manages to cover a wide variety of the different aspects of the subject, at times in surprising depth. Plus it does so in the most natural context for this subject: engineering, where it was born.

I have read quite a few books on Thermodynamics before this one, and I was really surprised and delighted by how much I got out of it. I'd give it six stars if I could.

The prerequisites are basic multivariable calculus and elementary ordinary differential equations as well as elementary classical mechanics. Some elementary fluid mechanics would be helpful too, but is by no means essential.

The book includes more than enough problems for even the most avid student, and the problems cover the gamut from simple plug-and-chug, to computational problems that can be solved using the software included on the DVD, to conceptual questions, to open ended design and investigation problems.

The book also includes copious tables of thermodynamical property data that can - and sometimes must - be consulted to solve the problems.

The only substantial criticism I have concerns some of the optional sections that typically end the chapters. In particular the one on entropy rubbed me the wrong way by trying to explain entropy as disorganization. The example of the messy library having more entropy than the one where the books are organized appropriately on the shelves really bothered me. What we casually mean by disorganization should absolutely not be confused with entropy and books like this one should work to dispel such notions rather than encourage them in the same way mechanics books seek to dispel misconceptions about terms such as "work" and "energy".

On the other hand the optional section on separation of mixtures more than made up for this.

I also found the treatment of exergy quite illuminating. This is a concept with which I was completely unfamiliar prior to reading this book.

Overall, this is a truly excellent book which does a good job of awakening the reader to the thermodynamic phenomena all around them, and consequently bringing them to a deeper understanding of the physical world.

Take your time with it, and you will get a lot out of it.

Excellent Thermodynamics Textbook
By Amazon Customer
This book is an excellent textbook for Mechanical Engineers studying thermodynamics. Everything is explained clearly, the example problems show all steps arriving to an answer, and the text is very easy to read and comprehend. Highly recommended book for engineers. Only downside would be the problems at the end of the chapter are rather simple and too easy to solve. I would suggest to use this book to learn the concepts and then use other textbooks like Moran's Fundamental of Engineering Thermodynamics to solve advanced problems.

Acceptable but Annoying
By Redmond Geek
This text is a fairly standard treatment of classical (macroscopic) thermodynamics. It is targeted specifically at students of mechanical engineering. Anyone going into some other engineering discipline that depends on thermo (e.g., chem eng) -- or into one of the hard sciences (physics, biophys, biochem, chemistry, etc.) -- will get very little value from this book. Its main focus seems to be on the use of the right formula to solve specific kinds of problems. ("Plug and chug.")

There are many annoying things about this book. Perhaps the worst are the contrived "special topics" sections. These are an attempt by the authors to bring some kind of real-world relevance to their subject matter. These might also be called "Thermodynamics in Everyday Life." The concept is good, but the execution falls flat on it face. A few examples:

* 12 pages on dieting advice and recipes.

* 10 pages on choosing an automobile and driving it so as to maximize mileage.

* A long and detailed description of the method of electrically stunning, slaughtering, and freezing chickens.

* Several pages on the disadvantages of saying angry things to your co-workers (it increases "social entropy").

All-in all, these "special topics" fill about 20% of the book's total page count. The book would have been clearer, shorter, and presumably less expensive without them; it would also have killed fewer trees - another topic the authors devoted a "special topic" section to.

The artwork in the book is pathetic as well. The majority of it seems to be 2-D vector images taken from a freebie clipart collection. This alternates with some "Dagwood and Blondie" cartoons where (apparently) the authors have replaced the contents of the dialog baloons with clever sayings about thermodynamics.

In summary, this is a very irritating book to use. The level of information not very deep, and all the "good stuff" is hidden away between discussions of salad dressing and frozen chicken carcasses. There's got to be something better out there.
