This text is a classic in probability, statistics, and estimation and in the application of these fields to modern engineering problems. Probability, Random Variables, and Stochastic Processes assumes a strong college mathematics background. The first half of the text develops the basic machinery of probability and statistics from first principles while the second half develops applications of the basic theory. Topics in the first section include probability distributions and densities, random variables and vectors, expectations, covariance, correlations, functions of random variables and vectors, and conditional distributions and densities. In this third edition of the text, the second half of the book has been substantially updated and expanded to include new or revised discussions of the following topics: mean square estimation, likelihood tests, maximum entropy methods, Monte Carlo techniques, spectral representations and estimation, sampling theory, bispectra and system identification, cyclostationary processes, deterministic signals in noise, and the Wiener and Kalman filters. Probability, Random Variables, and Stochastic Processes covers a remarkable density of material and the clarity of both presentation and notation make this book invaluable as a text and a reference.

About the Author
S. Unnikrishna Pillai is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn, New York. His research interests include radar signal processing, blind identification, spectrum estimation, data recovery and wavform diversity. Dr. Pillai is the author of Array Signal Processign and co-author of Spectrum Estimation and system Identification, Prof. Papoulis' Probability, Random Variables and Stochastic processes (Fourth edition), and Space Based Radar - Theory & Applications.

Found no substitute for a difficult subject

When readers and students ask to me for a useable book for nonmathematicians to get into probability (or a probabilistic approach to statistics), before embarking into deeper problems, I suggest this book by the Late A. Papoulis. I even recommend it to mathematicians as their training often tends to make them spend too much time on limit theorems and very little on the actual "plumbing".
The treatment has no measure theory, cuts to the chase, and can be used as a desk reference. If you want measure theory, go spend some time reading Billingsley. A deep understanding of measure theory is not necessary for scientific and engineering applications; it is not necessary for those who do not want to work on theorems and technical proofs.
I've notice a few complaints in the comments section by people who felt frustrated by the treatment: do not pay attention to them. Ignore them. It the subject itself that is difficult, not this book. The book, in fact, is admirable and comprehensive given the current state of the art.
I am using this book as a benchmark while writing my own, but more advanced, textbook (on errors in use of statistical models). Anything derived and presented in Papoulis, I can skip. And when students ask me what they need as pre-requisite to attend my class or read my book, my answer is: Papoulis if you are a scientist, Varadhan if you are more abstract.

Good book with the help of a good instructor

After reading almost all reviews, I actually think I agree with almost all including the ones that say it is not a book for beginners and ones that say that it is a great book written by a very knowledgeable author. As a student who just completed a course in this subject with this book as the text, here is what I would like to say:
1. My instructor re-ordered some of the content of the text for his course. It seemed necessary to understand certain concepts.
2. As one of the previous reviews mentioned, some of the important aspects of probability theory were hidden in problems, these were brought out by the instructor either as homeworks or as part of lecture notes and explained. This also means that it is not enough to just read this text and understand the examples. It is almost as important to go through the problems to get the complete picture
3. All in all I liked the book but I sure would not have liked it as much if I did not have a good instructor to go with it. Definitely not a self-study book.

Horrible is being too kind

I was forced to use this book for a course during my first year in Graduate School for Computer Engineering. I must say that this book is among the worst, if not the worst, I've encounterd. Concepts are never explained with any great degree of clarity: the authors' writing style is convoluted almost to the point of being indecipherable, new concepts are introduced with only minimal effort given to explaining their foundation and usefulness, and, conversely, concepts are proved using formulas/theorems that haven't yet been presented. If I hadn't previously taken a course using the excellent book "Probability and Statistics for Engineering and the Sciences" by Jay Devore, I wouldv'e been at a complete loss trying to understand the topics in this book.
If there is no way that you can avoid using this book, and if acquiring a well-written, logically-organized companion textbook like the one I mentioned above isn't feasible, then at a minimum I recommend buying "Schaum's Outline of Probability, Random Variables, and Random Processes" -- it at least clearly presents the concepts. By the way, the price of this book is completely unjustifiable -- it's blatant robbery.

About the Author
William Cunningham is a professor of cell biology at the University of Minnesota. He received a B.S. degree in biology from Southwest Texas State College in 1959 and a Ph.D. in botany from the University of Texas in 1963. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at both the Wenner Gren Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and Purdue University. He holds memberships in many biological/educational societies and organizations and has received numerous honors and awards. Dr. Cunningham has devoted himself to education and teaching development at the undergraduate level in biology. He began his educational career in structural biology but for the last 10-15 years has concentrated on environmental science, teaching courses such as Social Uses of Biology; Garbage, Government, and the Globe; Environmental Ethics; and Conservation History. Within the past four years, he has received both of the two highest teaching honors that the University of Minnesota bestows -- The Distinguished Teaching Award and a $15,000 Amoco Alumni Award. This year he is serving as Faculty Mentor for younger faculty at the university, sharing the knowledge and teaching skills that he has gained during his distinguished career.

Gentle on the issues but well written.

I am an environmental science teacher who chooses to use this book. I agree with the long winded reviewer that this book is gentle on the issues, but believe this approach to be important in an introductory course. As the teacher, I make it my job to color the issues I find important. The 8th edition is out, so this version will become less popular.

Clear pictures and text, captures interest, motivates people to be kind to our planet

It is no surprise to me that this book won a 2016 Best Book Award. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but the picture of a boy looking into his reflection in the water does give a peek into what this book is about: simple pictures and graphs to enhance our knowledge of the environment and man's relationship to the environment.

I used this book for my Environmental Science class and found myself looking forward to read the assigned reading, because the text captured my interest in a relevant and clear way. Being a visual learner, I could understand the environmental concepts and issues with ease given the accompanying, clear illustrations - which still stick in my mind today.

After taking this course, my passion for being an environmental steward increased. I also became a more informed citizen, understanding the connection between political or cultural issues related to underlying environmental factors. This new passion and knowledge gained from this course and book motivated me to volunteer in the in a local youth conservation program, where we spent 7 weeks removing invasive species, planting native plants, building hiking trails, counting native species, camping atop a mountain range to engage in post-forest fire and erosion rehabilitation work...my Environmental Science teacher and this book gave me a greater appreciation and understanding of the larger implications for the work we did. When the days were long and work intensive, I would remember the lessons I learned from "Environmental Science: A Global Concern" and gain extra motivation and energy to do my best and part to care for the earth.

Now, speaking as a teacher, I can attest that this book is a great read and handy for students - it doesn't feel like a typical textbook, captures interest and motivates students to be kind to our planet!

I bought this book to reduce my expenses for grad school. it is identical to the US version the professor is using. And i love having a paperback textbook instead of hardcover. its much lighter to carry around. Sometimes paperbacks can be fragile but the pages are staying intact.

The Best

This is the best clinical physiology text one can buy. Rose has such a beautifully elegant writing style that you will not want to put this book down. I kid you not, this is the only book you will need to understand fluids, electrolytes and acid/base physiology. This text book is filled with repetition all in the hopes of having the reader understand. Fluid and acid/base can be incredibly complicated but this book clearly shows how everthing actually makes sense. Fluid and electrolytes in my opinion are the hub for medicine - this book will get you rolling. Man, they need a gold-bound edition for this bad boy. All kidding aside if you are a fan of Guyton...you'll be a fan of Rose.

Excellent Book For All Levels

I am currently studying medicine and got this book to help get a handle on the renal system and acid-base topics. I found it easy to understand, with good detail and lots of extra information. The case studies are a great way to illustrate the different conditions. I would definitely recommend it if you are keen to get a handle on (or master) acid-base and electrolyte physiology and disorders.

As a medical student with an interest in nephrology and acid-base disorders, this book provides a readable but rigorous discussion of the subject. Chapters are well-organized and do not have to be read in order - they are written to be independently referenced as the need arises.

Don't quit your job to day-trade quite yet!

The information in this book is simplistic and (in my opinion) there does indeed seem to be a not-so-hidden agenda aiming readers toward the author's courses and his trading firm. On the other hand, if you don't know much about trading, it's a pretty good introduction to the basics.
Most of the strategies discussed would work equally well simply by using any of the reputable on-line brokerage firms such as Waterhouse or E*Trade for trade executions. In my experience, placing appropriate limit orders with a good online broker results in almost instantaneous executions and if you want to play the level II NASDAQ game, well, good luck! May I say from many years of trading: If you wish to "scalp" or do short term swing trading, or make money on 1/8 point moves at the speed of light, beware! (At least the author warns of the inherent dangers lurking to snag the day trader.)
It's OK to be optimistic, and this book certainly is. It's a little reminiscent of the now-infamous "Wall Street Money Machine" (by a former cab driver who will go un-named) but to be fair, it's not nearly as irresponsible. It IS a GREAT idea to simulate trades before you use real money and, to the author's credit, this rational approach is advocated. Then details get quite fuzzy and the clear message seems to be: For more details, take my course.
In the 1990's I have watched friends and aquaintances jump into the various "hot" and "exciting" arenas of OEX options, option writing and buying, commodity futures, short-term-day trading, and the like. These are not dumb or untrained people, but PhDs in engineering, business professionals and the like. Results have been, to put it kindly, mixed, and one of them got wiped out to the tune of $200K rather efficiently.
My wife was a financial analyst for a Fortune 500 company and I have been a trader for many years. Now that I am retired from my engineering career, I have lots of time to dedicate to the craft of trading...I choose the word "craft" deliberately...and my advice to those who "have a passion for trading" is: Take a cold bath for the passion, learn as much as you can as long as you can, and then start with teeny trades, one at a time. Maybe one day I'll actually meet somebody who was an instant success in this challenging area, but I haven't yet.

A good start, but not great

Nasser has done a respectable job teaching some aspects of trading. However, it's not the best place to start. And certainly does not tell you "everything" you need to know to day trade. The author writes as if assuming that the reader already already understands much of trading. This book is no match for a full course in day trading.

Outdated and overpriced.

When it comes to money making e.fads (as daytrading is now seen) you need the absolute most accurate up-to-the-minute information available to succeed. This book is simply none of the above. Sorry.
If you really want to know how to get started (or if you even should) go to one of the daytrading .coms and read their FAQ. Their information will be the most up-to-daye around, and they might even offer advice that will help you get your finances in order before you start.

About the Author
Judy Pearson is the director of Northern Virginia Graduate Center in Falls Church, Virginia, and she is an associate dean of the Graduate School and a professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She has co-authored the two books mentioned previously, has authored or co-authored six other textbooks, and has authored two trade books. The authors have been writing basic course texts for twenty years, because the beginning courses are their first love. Both began their careers as basic course directors in large programs at the University of Missouri, Iowa State, and Bradley. They even met at a basic course conference, married, and have been producing children and books ever since. Paul Nelson is the dean of the College of Communication at Ohio University and has co-authored seven editions of Confidence in Public Speaking and eight editions of An Introduction to Human Communication.

exactly what i wanted

The book; Human Communications, was on this website. It had a small description and a rating for quality of condition of the book. I ordered it and waitied the standard set of shipping time. Upon recievall, the book was actually in better shape than the post claimed. The only thing the poster should have noted was that the previous owner had underlined and highlighted throughout many of the pages. Nonetheless, that makes no matter to me, as I would have done the same. I'm very happy with my purchase

Oh Look An Other Textbook

Attention college students this book is that not waste of money or time. It provides some very useful tools that will be helpful later on in life. Now here is a question. Why didn't my high school teach this stuff. Knowing how to be an effective listener what have been so helpful before this.

About the Author
Ronald B. Adler is Associate Professor of Communication at Santa Barbara City College, where he specializes in organizational and interpersonal communication. He is the author of Confidence in Communication: A Guide to Assertive and Social Skills and coauthor of Understanding Human Communication, Interplay: the Process of Interpersonal Communication as well as the widely used text Looking Out/Looking In. He is a consultant for a number of corporate, professional, and government clients and leads workshops in such areas as conflict resolution, presentational speaking, team building, and interviewing. Jeanne Marquardt Elmhorst has been involved in communication studies for over 15 years. She received her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, then traveled and taught in Asia for three years, sparking her interest in intercultural communication. She has taught at the University of Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico. She is currently an instructor at Albuquerque TVI Community College, where her courses reflect the variety in the communication discipline: business and professional, organizational, listening, gender, intercultural, and interpersonal. Jeanne also provides training for business and government clients.

Treat it Like an Heirloom

The two coeds who have already reviewed this book are not aware of what printed gold they possess, judging by their reviews. This book is one they should carry with them throughout their working lives. Their biggest career mistake might be selling it back to the bookstore.

If they were here I would tell them how perfectly unproductive and boring it has been to have sat through hundreds of hours of boring presentations, training, and absolutely worthless, time-consuming meetings. The only bright side to such agony is that they have provided me with income, training people how to correct these limitations.

This book, editions 2 and 3 were the core of my experience learning communication skills. My first purchase was in 1983 or 4. (The 2nd edition was stolen). The book is divided into four parts: 1) Basics of Business and Professional Communication, 2) Personal Skills, 3) Working in Groups, 4) Making Effective Presentations. These parts covered many neglected skills such interviewing skills, from which I learned to teach interviewer skills and perhaps the most important of all, listening skills. The book also covers problem solving, conflict management, negotiation, and other essential skill-building topics. The last four chapters on presentation skills were the start point for my thesis. I can only imagine how much better the 10th edition is!

I highly recommend that you purchase this if you feel you are not effective at making presentations, running meetings, listening, or interviewing. Many employees confided to me how badly their boss needed the training, while their boss told me that his employees needed the training!

This book is not just for students; it is also for the person already in business. It is also for those who think they won't need it. Studies show that even blue-collar workers will make some form of presentation at least four times in their lives according to the author.

Buy it, and treat it like an heirloom.

P. S. Professor Adler might not be happy at my adding this, but he is also accessible and his suggestions have been helpful. (That was before the Internet).

As far as text books go...

This book is not bad. While there is nothing very exciting to me in a book like this, it does have some interesting information regarding interpersonal relationships, race relations, human behavioral patterns, etc. I gave it four stars because it accomplishes what it set out to do (and I'm feeling generous).
