The book strives to make this material understandable by the use of intuition and numerous figures, examples, and problems. It is equally well suited for use in university courses, simulation practice, and self study. The book is widely regarded as the 'bible' of simulation and now has more than 100,000 copies in print. The book can serve as the primary text for a variety of courses; for example: a first course in simulation at the junior, senior, or beginning-graduate-student level in engineering, manufacturing, business, or computer science (Chapters 1 through 4, and parts of Chapters 5 through 9). At the end of such a course, the students will be prepared to carry out complete and effective simulation studies, and to take advanced simulation courses. This book serves as a second course in simulation for graduate students in any of the above disciplines (most of Chapters 5 through 12). After completing this course, the student should be familiar with the more advanced methodological issues involved in a simulation study, and should be prepared to understand and conduct simulation research. This book also serves as an introduction to simulation as part of a general course in operations research or management science (part of Chapters 1, 3, 5, 6, and 9).

Bible for Operations Research / Statistical Analysis

Law is about as authoritative as you can get for M&S / Operations Research and systems analysis (ORSA). If you are building a library or need a comprehensive reference for advanced studies or your analytic work, it is probably no surprise that this book would be highly recommended. Not necessarily for the lay person, you need some fundamental skills in mathematics, statistics, probability etc. to really leverage the information in this book. I used a previous version in graduate school 20 years ago and HAD to add this to my work reference library.

5-stars; like a good prostate exam

This was a tough one to rate... Amazon has a qualitative equivalent for each star rating level; 1-star is "I hate it", 2-stars is "I don't like it", 3-stars is "It's okay", 4-stars is "I like it", and 5-stars is "I love it". This qualitative equivalent sometimes puts me at odds on how I want to rate something. I'll try to give an example of something that is more common to people than a sim book. I'm a guy and I'm at the age where I'm *supposed* to go in for a yearly check-up. As part of this yearly check-up the doctor sticks his finger in your rectum to help determine if you have prostate problems. Now let's say I have word renowned doctor that is an expert in determining prostate problems and he performs this activity, and let's say he does a 5-star job. Do I now have to say that I loved this procedure? So most of you can now see the conundrum here. To say I loved this book would be like saying I love having someone stick their finger in my rectum to inspect my prostate. On the other hand, this is a great analogy to me for reading mathematically intensive books. They were necessary for my education and the knowledge I obtained from them continues to be necessary for my career. So when I give this book a 5-star review, it is not because I love this book, it is because this book does a good job at setting out to convey knowledge about simulation modeling and analysis concepts.

Btw, this book is very mathematically intensive (for me anyway); especially in terms of statistical analysis. In my career I work around a lot of physics based simulations and "entity-level" simulations for defense related scenarios, so I had some misconceptions about the class that I used this book in. However, it was required for my Masters degree, so sometimes you have to just have to bend over and start reading.

It is not stated in the description, but this book is the "Special Indian Edition" for sale in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Bhutan only. The contents are in English, but I have no idea if the material is the same as the standard edition.

About the Author
Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and seventh editions of Human Development and the eighth edition of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr.Papalia and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. A former teacher, she has developed educational materials for all levels from elementary school through college and has prepared ancillaries to accompany the Papalia-Olds books. She is author or coauthor of four books addressed to general readers, including Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted. She has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has lectured extensively and made national and local media appearances throughout the United States on education and gifted children. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she was graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Textbook review

This book was very easy to read and understand, and it was informative. Though Developmental Psychology is always a challenge, Papalia, Olds, and Feldman, did a great job of tying it together in a logical function. The end of chapter reviews were excellent for exam preparation.

Just what was needed...

This book was just what my daughter needed for her on-line course. I was not particularly happy with the time frame in which it was delivered. The class had commenced a week before the book arrived, and it only had to go from IN to OH! The condition of the product was fine - just as described.

I saved at least 80% , the school was selling it for $130 , did not have all the funds I decided to check amazon for it and found it. I was so happy I did not have to spend all that money.

"Conservation Biology: Foundations, Concepts, Applications" is a great textbook for the serious biology student or resource management professional. Cutting edge content was immediately applicable in a faunal survey, and gave me a boost of confidence with more experienced colleagues. Dr. Van Dyke places the science and each of its paradigms in perspective: how did they develop? How are they used and have they persisted? Principles are covered thoroughly, with factual illustrations. Diagrams, figures and study questions help make complex principles understandable. The chapters on values and ethics in conservation is tastefully and powerfully written, addressing an aspect of conservation too often sidestepped. Conservation of habitats and landscapes and conservation of aquatic ecosystems are particularly interesting and useful material. The web site with practice questions was a helpful tool for the family-career-graduate studies time management juggling act.

Excellent Book - Best of its kind.

This is an exceptional book. It walks the reader through all stages of writing a biomedical paper, and exemplifies the saying that "clear writing means clear thinking". Even after having written or co-written perhaps 40 biomedical papers and grants, I found this book an eye-opener. I've worked with some excellent writers and re-writers on biomed papers, but Zeiger's book lays out for all of us what some top writers may do by instinct. She starts with word choice, sentence structure, then alternative paragraph structures. She practically shows you the nature of language and thought. She goes through the right way to produce biomed papers - if you ever thought the great, efficient writers had a rule book -you- never got, THIS is the rule book. If you ever had an introduction that sounded like the abstract, or a results sections that was unwieldy, or a discussion section that seemed to repeat the introduction - Zeiger lays out the hidden rules that most people would want to follow. Following her rules, from sentence to paragraph to section, creates a paper that invokes an instinctive sense of clarity in the reader. Many times I had the "Aha!" feeling. The book should be very useful for all kinds of clear writing, including research grants. I never took one of those "scientific writing" classes because I felt smart and fluent and the classes seemed pedestrian. If those classes had used this book, I would have been way ahead to have discovered this information twenty years ago.

This book will improve your papers

This is an outstanding book on how to improve the writing of biomedical research papers. It is well organized, well presented and extremely helpful.

I bought several writing books at the same time and this one stands out because not only is it a "how-to" book, but it is a workbook and mostly consists of exercises. There is plenty of space in the book to do the exercises right in the book. This is extremely important, because you can read about the rules for improving your writing, but you really don't learn how to use them until you practice rewriting actual sentences.

Significantly, this book has dramatically improved my ability to edit my own papers, which has been one of my nagging writing weaknesses.

Mediocre

I have an earlier version of this book and I also had Dr. Proakis as a professor in graduate school. Dr. Proakis has a nack of making something simple into something complex. His teaching style is similar. I always thought com theory was very difficult until I read books by others that discussed the same topics in a more cogent and lucid style.

Good coverage but poor organization ...

I both love and hate this book at the same time! Its great for its wide coverage and unified presentation of material but the organization is rather poor indeed. There is little motivation and the material is presented as a matter of fact collection of topics. The presentation also seems to be out of sequence at times.
Other gripes: The errata is quite large and still not complete. Upon closer inspection, I found that several of the problems require assumptions that are not clearly described in the problem statement. This leads to a frustrating experience at times.
I can think of ways in which the material could be re-organized to make the "flow" much better. Doing this and adding little motivation and connecting material would make this a truly great book. I don't think that much additional effort is required for the re-organization - too bad this hasn't happened in the first 4 editions.
A major plus of the book remains - nothing else comes close in coverage. So it is still a pretty decent book if you can get the intuition and organization from elsewhere.

worst textbook ever

I took a graduate class at the University of Cincinnati and they used this book (it was round 2 for me as I had Communication Systems with his book that was co-authored by Salehi). Two classes + two Proakis books = brain hemorrhage. I will say that if you are mathematically strong doing well in these courses won't pose a problem. However, the amount of rereading needed to hammer in the concepts is overwhelming. It wouldn't have to be this way if he put in a lot of examples. Also, most of the problems are proofs or very complex and for that reason I noticed that neither of the professors that I had used problems from the book on exams. One exam was forced to become a take home as the results were so terrible and the other was a gram schmidt problem coupled with a small proof on bandpass signals. Some advice is in order. Follow these steps if you want to learn the material:

1.) Take and ace a Random Processes class. This will get you the background you need to blow through chapters 2 and 4 of Digital Communications by Proakis.

2.) Over break or during free time pick up the Communication Systems Engineering book and read through chapter 7 to hammer home chapter 5 of Digital Communications.

3.) Invest in a solution manual if you can find it. This way one can try ALL of the problems in the text and really learn the material.

As a final note, if you can master this course then there is absolutely no graduate class that will stand in your way. Any wireless or DSP class will seem like calc I after it.

I ordered this book on the25th of January and I received it on the10th of February .After waiting for more than two weeks I received a Wrong Book!!!!! My class started earlier and I had Exam just the day after I received the book.
They disappointed me totally!!!!
