Excellent as a reference

This book is intended to be a textbook for drafting students (high school, maybe college). I bought it as a reference book for CAD work, however, and it has been useful.

It covers some hand drafting subjects, CAD, and subjects that are applicable to either. Some of the topics include GD&T, weld symbols, gears, fasteners, and bearings.

For learning and for general reference, I'd recommend it.

An Excellent Overview of Options

This book presents a highly readable overview of the subject of options and I would recommend it to anyone. I have not been able to find one book on options which is as wide ranging in its scope (i.e., history, pricing, strategy, individual and institutional investors' approaches, how the trading floor operates, how market makers trade, etc.). The authors have struck a good balance between depth of the subject matter and readability. There are more detailed texts available in the area of strategy (McMillan's _Options as a Strategic Investment_) or pricing (Natenberg's _Option Volatility and Pricing_), but I would especially recommend this book to individual investors interested in options. After reading this book they will have a much stronger footing from which to approach the forementioned other books (which are also excellent, by the way).
The previous reviewer's comments should be disregarded as I cannot conceive of anyone writing about this subject matter any more clearly (yes, I have read both of Fontanills' books) -- the authors appear to have put much effort into this book judging by its clarity, and one nitwit's daffy comments should not dissuade you!

This book was written by members (brokers and market-makers) and staff of the Chicago Board Options Exchange. It is excellently written, easy to understand and provides many insights into the detail oriented side of options. It discusses the various aspects of options pricing and trading strategies. I would recommend the book to beginners as well as advanced option traders

Veteran speaker and storyteller Grady Jim Robinson adds, "Science can teach us the empirical truths and laws of the universe, but it is another domain that reveals the meaning behind those laws. Through the symbols and archetypes of story or myth, human beings connect at the deepest levels. Storytelling -- like painting, music, literature, poetry, or dance -- is an art form. And art in its purest state brings the viewer or listener into the very presence of the divine."
For years, Robinson has shared with audiences stories of his early life in small-town Arkansas: a sensitive boy, growing up in the shadow of an older brother who excelled in sports and schoolwork, and the even greater shadow of a gruff father who towered over the area as a highly successful sports coach. The stories paint vivid and unforgettable pictures of a young boy confronting his first Little League at-bat against a menacing pitcher nicknamed "Fishhook," or being pushed out unexpectedly on to the court by his father as the unwilling fifth player at a B-team basketball game so his team would not forfeit.
Robinson discovered that these stories resonated at a profound level with audiences from Harlem to Hollywood. Why? Most of them had no actual experience of life in rural Arkansas. In one case an African American woman who grew up in Harlem told Robinson that in listening to his stories about his father, she felt he was talking about her own father. Robinson sought to understand how this could be.
He discovered Joseph Campbell.
Campbell showed that in cultures around the world and throughout the centuries, universal symbols and themes have emerged in story and legend to which human beings instinctively respond. And the most basic ingredient of all is the "hero's journey," in which the subject leaves his familiar life and embarks on a quest, facing archetypal foes and challenges one after another until confronted with the Supreme Ordeal which will change him forever. He then returns, so changed, to the world he left, bringing the result with him. It is the stuff of "Beowulf" and it is the stuff of "Star Wars." It is the stuff of a young boy in Arkansas determined not to duck when Fishhook's first pitch comes rocketing toward the plate.
It is the stuff, believes Robinson, of which life-changing and memorable speeches are made.
In this book, Robinson examines the nature of human stories in detail, exploring their power, the elements that make a good story, and the trance-like state that audiences fall into while a story is being told. He presents several of his best-known stories and analyzes what he has done to make them most effective. And he presents a number of ideas to get readers started on identifying and shaping the powerful stories from their own lives, because he believes everyone has faced trials and tribulations that will strike universal chords with audiences.

Excellent book to read on public speaking. I have read and reviewed on Amazon 37 public speaking books. This book is in the top five that I would recommend. The book is very easy to read yet the author is aggressively analytical about what makes a good story that would be effective in a speech. He traces his early thoughts on what makes a good story to his more recent fleshed out analysis. What makes some stories grab you and others boring? Read this book. Stories of mythology are very old and still make connections deep in the soul. Robinson explains the ingredients of what makes these stories great. Great fun!

Read it on the flight back from California, and laughed out loud on the plane, so much so that the other passsengers asked me to pass the book up and down the aisles. A must for actual and potential speakers, storytellers, lovers of humor, Americans, sothern Americans, guys, educators, sports fans, and everybody else. And with an underlying philosophy/message, and lots of great allusions. I've known Grady Jim as a speaker, but this is the first book of his I've read, and it's a hoot and an eye-opener. Have fun, and tell a friend about it.

About the Author
Dr. Stewart "Stu" Tubbs is the Darrell H. Cooper Professor of Leadership and is the former Dean of the College of Business at Eastern Michigan University. He received his doctorate from the University of Kansas, his Masters and Bachelors degrees are from Bowling Green State University. He has completed postdoctoral study at Harvard Business School and at Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Tubbs has consulted for numerous corporations and has won three awards for his outstanding teaching. In 1994 he received the Outstanding Leadership Award in London, England from the Academy of Business Administration. He is the author of A Systems Approach to Small Group Interaction (7th ed.), 2001 and co-author with Sylvia Moss of Human Communication (8th ed.), 2000, both published by McGraw-Hill. I've read worse... much worse.

For a textbook, it's not half-bad. This was the textbook for my Surface Water Dynamics class (a post-graduate civil engineering class).

The course used this book to cover the following:
- Using Specific Energy and Momentum to solve steady state flow problems
- Solving uniform flow problems (including Manning's and other methods)
- Solving gradually varied flow problems
- Designing and evaluating hydraulic structures
- Solving unsteady flow problems using
- Numerical methods,
- Flood routing,
- HEC-RAS

It briefly discusses sediment transport, but my class didn't spend much time on that.

Hydrology and Hydraulics have always been challenging for me (compared to other engineering subjects), but I think this class really helped me understand the subject much better.

Most of the explanations are clear. I never quite understood the control volume example (which is unfortunate because the book uses it over and over again), but I think that's something you're supposed to understand in undergraduate hydraulics. But the material that is actually part of this class was easy to follow and understand. Not very many examples, but the examples provided are good ones. It didn't lose me until we got to numerical methods (but I really didn't have much time to study at that point either).

It drags a bit in the beginning of each chapter, talking a lot about history and development of methods before getting into the mechanics of how they work. But it does have a rhythm to it. Once you get used to it you can quickly skim over the history stuff and read the more applicable information.

Not a lot of detail in this, I know. I guess the bottom line is that this is one textbook that I intend to keep in my reference library (I tossed all my undergrad books on the subject).

Utterly terrible

Some people have said that you need a fluid mechanics background before reading this text. Well I have a fluid mechanics background and it doesn't make much difference. Right up front, in Chapter 1, he starts randomly referring to obscure (if you haven't already studied open channels) authors, equations, and concepts without the slightest introduction or explanation.

In general it is badly written, disorganized, and in serious need of an editor. Take your business elsewhere.

Seeley’s Anatomy and Physiology was the required textbook for Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 at the University of Cincinnati. This book was so helpful in this class. I would always listen in lecture then refer back to this book to really grasp that topic and read about the small details. This class is a very difficult class to master, but the book went into depth and gave real life situations. For example, I remember talking about negative and positive feedback in the body and the book gave multiple examples for each. An example the book gave is Positive feedback is something like labor during child birth and negative feedback is something like getting hot and sweating. They would often include graphics and diagrams for the harder concepts. They both really help you put the concept into perspective. There were certain sections I remember reading thinking that I felt like the authors were talking to their colleagues instead of a student which made it hard to comprehend at some points, with the help of notes the two were extremely helpful. Along with the textbook I would recommend getting the study guide that is suggested to get with it. It is based off the textbook and has quizzes and different questions covering every chapter. This would be useful when I was trying to figure out what to study more for a test. I would take the quizzes to see what I did not know. I am making this to help students like me succeed. I am majoring in middle childhood education science and social studies. The life sciences particularly interest me which made it easier to read this book. The one point I would suggest to the reader is to split the chapters up in chunks do not try to sit and read a whole chapter in one sitting, this can be very dull and hard to comprehend. The lab book compliments the textbook very well. It offers hands on experiments and explanations that the textbook does not. It helps with the anatomy component as the textbook focuses on the physiology component. If you buy the book new the book comes with an online component that can be used as additional quizzes, explanations, and questions, but if you rent or buy it used you would have to purchase the code separately. I personally thought it was worth spending the extra money. The online really helped me grasp the basic concepts of each chapter. The chapters also summarize what it was about at the end, which I liked very much. The disadvantage to this book is how wordy it can be, which makes it difficult to read about concepts you may not have a lot of background knowledge about. The pictures included with the section often help further explain what the text is trying to get across.

Just what I asked for!

I Ordered the Seeley's International Edition A&P book because I was a little short on cash for the "Real Deal" and had rented book during that time, I found out from a friend in one of by Bio classes that you can buy International books way cheaper than the "Real Deal" Textbook and possibly even cheaper than renting. I Looked into it and WOW was the only word, International is the way to go for many of your books you know are going to get used alot. I dont think I will ever buy the originals unless I just have money laying around, Its the same book just with a different cover and it's not hardback witch I dont like hardbacks anyways so this book is great for me.

You Need More Practice and More Review? Buy if you must!

This book hardly teaches "how to solve word problem in Geometry". It just crams as much geometry definitions and theorems as it can into small space which can only confuse students that are already confused. In fact, the listing of concepts are not ordered well either.
I almost gave this book 1 star rating since I strongly believed this book DID NOT do the job as its' cover seem to promise. But!...I gave the author some credit for her good intentions and thought about some that it MIGHT benefit...
First, she gives us the shortest Geometry review ever! (I think even Cliff Notes does more)...and points to couple of examples that are somewhat helpful. It adds short exercises (about 10 per chapter) with complete solutions (which is nice). Yes, it may be good for those that want to quickly review (or the quickest review), but there are other books out there that are MUCH more...MUCH better.
I recommend: Geometry the Easy Way by L. Leff. And in many Test Prep. books like those of SAT and GRE contains surprisingly good reviews on Geometry with very insightful problems. I personally like Kaplan's materials.
One more note: The other book of this series "How to Solve Word Problems in Algebra" on the contrary does an excellent job! It really helps.

lethally dull

i picked up this book just 4 the fin of it, 4 lil geometry problem drill. goodness, so so many mistakes were found. first of all, this book is only good 4 people who alredy know geometry, not 4 ppl who hope 2 learn sum of it by reading this book, cuz if i dint no geometry b4 pickin up this book, i would be at a complete lost. 2ndly, the book has made so many mistakes in answers and problem solving techniques that, again, if u dint no how 2 solve the prob b4hand, u would b at a complete lost. lastly, the book would overwhelm its reader with all its definitions, postulates, and theorems. only about 1/5 of the whole book is actually problem solving and the problems are not even that "advanced" to play around with, only the typical ones u would find in any geometry textbook. the book, in my opinion, dusnt even really deserve 2 stars, but i'm nice. :) (P.S. try the how to solve word problems 4 algebra 1, a much more better and thorougly ritten book).

Good points :

Each chapter(11 of them) covers a Specific type of geometric problem such as Deductive Reasoning or Inequalities in Geometry.

A 50-question miscellaneous problem drill WITH ANSWERS, such as question 19 : A homeowner wants to replace a kitchen floor measuring 13 feet by 24 feet with floor tiles,....

Examples with completely worked solutions for every type of problem such as in Chapter 6 on Inequalities in Geometry, where Example 1 reads :Create a table in which you list (1) the statement (2) the contrapositive (3) the converse, and (4) the inverse of the following statement ....

Sequential procedures for all types of problems.

What makes this book special : " the knowledge of the specialized vocabulary and symbols of geometry, practice of word problems, how to read a diagram and how to draw a diagram from given information; the goal : master the basics.

Why 3 stars ? The book does not go beyond the basics,; the answers for the miscellaneous problem drill do not provide a detailed answer.

About the Author
Stephen Penman is the L.H. Penney Professor of Accounting at the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1978. He has published extensively in the Journal of Accounting and Economics, the Journal of Accounting Research, and the Contemporary Accounting Research journal. he currently on the editorial board of the Review of Accounting Studies. The author has passion for the subject (rare!) and tries to merge the finance and accounting perspectives (also rare!)

Most books on financial statement analysis are written by professors that neither are passionate about the subject nor are interested in practical applications. A recent mistake was to spend $50 on International Financial Statement Analysis (CFA Institute Investment Series). The current book is different because the author really seems to care about the topic and he freely dishes out advice. He is part of the Graham & Dodd value-based investment crowd.

It is hard to find similar material outside textbooks, so you will have to bear with the extremely tedious format of US textbooks (whether you are a student or not). The key alternative is Valuation: Measuring and Managing the Value of Companies, 5th Edition (Wiley Finance), which is written for managers and largely lacks the accounting perspective. If I only could buy one book, that would be my choice.

A strength of the current book is an attempt to bridge the accounting and finance perspectives. Briefly, the accountants like accrual accounting, the finance guys like cash flow, and most of the time they do not talk to each other. The current book presents several ratios and perspectives that could be used in financial model building. In that regard it is more advanced than the recommended book above.

A key weakness with the current book is that it does not go into sufficient depth on important topics in valuation, like goodwill after acquisitions, pension reserves, revenue recognition, capitalisation of R&D, etc. This is a weakness shared with all the textbooks that I have seen. A second key weakness is that the book only covers US accounting standards. I guess it is fair to draw the line somewhere, but for practitioners it is a serious weakness.

The author has a brief book Accounting for Value (Columbia Business School Publishing) focusing on the theory of valuation. Its content is similar, but I actually prefer the textbook because it provides some useful numerical examples. Please also note that at the time of writing this review, there is a fifth edition of the book listed, but it does not seem available for sale yet. I rate the current book four stars.

Best Financial Statement Book Period

On Wall Street, this book is a staple. A basic reference that explains financial statement analysis like no other. A must read introduction. The only downside is some of the terms the author uses are a little different than terms used in the Bloomberg or FactSet system, so it takes a little understanding to get that one straight. It will be a long time before someone publishes a better text.

A fantastic book - must for all financial and business analysts

We had this book as the recommended text book in Strathclyde University (Glasgow) and initially I got a bit knocked out by Penman's approach because finance starts with CASH FLOWS and the writer does not approve the DCF Method. But once I settled into the book, trust me, its a BIBLE for FSA. Because the approach links Economic activity and Eco profit to valuation thus allowing greater clarity in understanding where VALUE actually comes from - something not so explicit when using DCF. And the best part of the book is the the 2-step to obtain FCF against the lengthy approach in Mckinsey Valuations and other text books. A good knowledge of excel can really help you get the best out of the book since using VLOOKUP and SUMIF you can create the templates just as described in the text book.The book does not use complicated language - basic concepts are from standard finance text books - Brealey & Myers, Ross Westerfield Jaffe, but the beauty lies in the way Penman integrates them into a holistic approach that can be used across various GAAPs and business functions.
