I Like It

The book is simple to read, which is what I like most about it. It gives an overall view of the components of a mechatronic system. However, the reader would probably need another text to go into actual design and implementation. For starters, this text is good, especially for students.

Stuart Fox is a professor at Pierce College in Los Angeles. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in Medical Physiology. In addition to his work on this text, he is the co-author of Concepts of Human A&P, Synopsis of Anatomy & Physiology, several lab manuals, and numerous research papers.

The key to understanding this book is

I am doing pre-reqs for nursing school. Of course physiology is a required course. I have to say at first I absolutely hated this book. I am new to sciences and I found this book NOT to be intended for the science neophyte. HOWEVER, this book was assigned reading so I was forced to contend with it. I just finished physio and I got an A for the course. I found that the key to understanding this expensive book was through my purchase of a very inexpensive book which gave me the best OVERVIEW of the fundamentals of physiology. That book is the 2009 Edition of "Campbell's Physiology Notes" by John Campbell. YOU must get the 2009 edition. It is listed here at amazon but Amazon says it is currently unavailable when in fact this is a brand new book. There is a way to get this book. Just google the words "campbellteaching and UK" and order the book directly from campbell's site.

If you want to see what I mean about how John Campbell's 2009 inexpensive book gets you through this Fox textbook: just try to read the section on Osmosis in this book and then go to youtube and watch John Campbell's video explanation of osmosis. He has several videos at youtube but watch the Osmosis one. THIS GUY IS AMAZING! If you need to understand some important physio concepts this is the guy to watch and his book is a great inexpensive book to own. AFter watching that youtube video of John Campbell's I bought his entire DVD collection.

I suggest you watch the video: just google the words "campbellteaching and youtube" and watch his video on Osmosis. THEN while you are at it google the words "campbellteaching and UK" and order his new 2009 "Campbell's Physiology Notes" (physiology book) and then you will not only better enjoy and appreciate this Fox Physiology book but FOR SURE you will better understand at least if you are new to all of this. THAT IS HOW I got my A in my physiology course. So I don't hate this Fox book any more, and I enjoyed many parts of it after reading and watching Campbell. This Fox book is just intended for a reader who is clear on the fundamentals so I got that from the Campbell book and then better appreciated this book.

Good book, easy to read and well organized

I am almost done using this textbook for my intro physiology class. I have been very pleased with the overall readability and simplicity of the book. Fox explains things clearly and with just the right amount of detail (for an intro course). There are a few areas here and there that were a bit confusing, and my professor pointed out a few errors, but no text book is perfect.

Also, if this book is required for a class, you can probably get a way with using one of the older editions as the changes from edition to edition are minimal (renumbering or reordering graphs, or sometimes just changing the colors of the graphs!). In my class students used everything from the 11th edition to the 9th edition. The international edition is identical to the US one, not to mention cheaper and lighter (it's softcover).

plethora of images aptly supplement the text

This is the textbook used in my bioengineering physiology class, and overall, it thus a great job of covering the basics of physiology without going too deep into the details. You get a nice view of the big picture and even get a lot of help understanding the concepts because of all the figures and images that they have included in this book. This would thus be an appropriate textbook if you're teaching yourself physiology as it applies to humans.

If you're looking for something that goes into more detail, more appropriate for a medical or professional bookshelf, I highly suggest checking out Guyton and Hall's Textbook of Medical Physiology. It is a book that will certainly be a great addition to the bookshelf of physicians and bioengineers alike.

We will have to wait some time longer for a good book on QoS. This is definitely not "the" book to read. The reasons are:
* This book needs an editor. The language needs to be simplified. (e.g. a sentence in chap 3: packet networks define capacity defined in packet-or-cells per second ... What do I make out of that sentence? And this is just one example.)
* This book needs a better technical review (IPv6 header is termed IPv4 header!)
Essentially, I think, the author started off with a "noble idea" of enlightening us "kids" with some Qos concepts. (I actually bought the book after reading through the table of contents, and the author's brief biography.) The author intended to organize the book well. But, he totally blew it on contents. In the preface the author states that "a central theme of the book is old-fashioned common sense." Then in chapter 3 the author goes on to explain why bandwidth and link capacity are different and instead of explaining in easier language the actual difference between baud, bandwidth, and bits-per-second, the author rambles into data communications theory and does a horrible job of it! He does not do justice either to the math of data communications or to common sense. Again, this is but one example.
So, in summary, this book is definitely not worth wasting your time and money on.

Excellent progression, excellent references

Dr. McDysan covers some very complicated topics, but starts at the beginning and works up to them, so that the reader can enter the discussion at their comfort level. The treatment is broad, with enough depth to provide the essential flavor, and plenty of references for further research when needed. A good QoS jumpstart that made me the local expert for the day :)

Excellent Book; don't believe Ma

Excellent organization in a way I have not seen in any other book: 7 parts, each with three chapters that gradually increase in level of difficulty. In depth review of all the basic concepts in probability and queuing. I am half way through it and already think it was worth it, even if the book only had the chapters I have read so far.

About the Author
Roy J. Lewicki is the Dean's Distinguished Teaching Professor at the Max M. Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University. He has authored or edited 24 books, as well as numerous research articles. Professor Lewicki received the first David Bradford Outstanding Educator award from the Organizational Behavior Teaching Society for his contributions to the field of teaching in negotiation and dispute resolution. He has won several teaching awards at Ohio State, and held visiting faculty positions at Dartmouth College and Georgetown University. David M. Saunders is Dean of the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Canada. He has co-authored several books and articles on negotiation, conflict resolution, employee voice and organizational justice. He is also the winner of a distinguished teacher award and co-developed the McGill Negotiation Simulator, a computer-based interactive video simulation of negotiation. Prior to his current appointment, David was Director of the McGill MBA Japan program in Tokyo, and he has traveled extensively throughout Asia and Europe. He and his wife Susan are the proud parents of Basil, a very active Wheaton Terrier puppy.

The text from Lewicki, Barry, and Saunders is the most complete - and comprehensive - compilation of articles, cases, and exercises I've found in my teaching Negotiations at college, University, and corporate business.

The authors/editors have selected excellent articles from some of the foremost writers on Negotiation ... and coupled them with cases which highlight what you've just read. I have recommended it to friends, and continute to select it for graduate level courses in Negotiations. My students like the text, and plan to keep it on their shelves (rather than sell it back to the bookstore).

The differences between this edition and the 7th edition are grossly overstated. The principles and concepts remain the same with minor changes apparent. Indeed, the author does not provide any examples of 'new and improved' changes. Readers will pay a overwhelming premium for nothing more than a slicker format and "co-author" englossed beneath the title.

Good information, hard to keep focus.

This book has some really good info in it, if you can stick with it. The book places few pictures within each chapter, and every pages looks the exact same. Four columns, black and white, four hundred pages. Reading can become exhausting and dry very quickly. I'd suggest finding something to do for a minute or so in between every few pages.

Numerical Methods made easy

I bought this book a little while ago to get more familiar with interpolation which I need to use in some of the signal analysis software that I write. As I was reading through the book I suddenly realized the overall usefulness of numerical methods in general. It has helped me code up routines for solving matrices and interpolation algorithms. After reading this book I really can not understand how courses in linear algebra and differential equations can be taught without extensive use of numerical methods.

This book has really opened my eyes to a whole new way of solving engineering problems.

I recommend "Numerical Methods for Engineers" as textbook

I teach Numerical Methods at undergraduate level in Mexico, and I have used "Numerical Methods for Engineers" during several years.
I like this book because of its approach to learning: each part contains Motivation, Mathematical Background and Orientation, then the numerical methods and finally an Epilogue.
Also, the number and variety of the problems presented contribute to accomplish our educational objectives, and the emphasis made on the growing use of software packages (MATLAB, Excel, Mathcad and IMSL) makes this book more useful for students and instructors.
This is an extensive book (more than 900 pages) and perhaps some parts of it must be omitted during a normal course (4 months, 4 hours per week in our case).
I think that the book price of the English edition (Hardcover) is high. Fortunately for our students, there is a cheaper Spanish version, although the translation is not very good (not in the technical sense but in writing and style).
In conclusion, I recommend the book to students and instructors as a comprehensive, learning oriented text with many problems in several engineering areas, and emphasis on the use of software packages, suitable to be used as textbook of numerical methods with extensive use of software.

About the Author
Krishna K. Havaldar is a Professor at the School of Business, Alliance University Bangalore. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad and a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pune. Prof. Havaldar has been a member of All India Management Association and has also served as the Dean at the Xavier Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship (XIME), Bangalore, and as the Principal at the RJS Institute of Management Studies, Bangalore. rior to his career in academia, Prof. Havaldar worked in the companies such as Blue Star Ltd, Crompton Greaves Ltd and Kirloskar Consultants for more than three decades in various capacities—starting from service engineer, area sales manager, regional marketing manager to marketing manager, general manager and vice-president. He has a number of publications and case studies to his credit and has also authored Business Marketing: Text & Cases, which is now in its third edition. Prof. Havaldar devotes his leisure time to yoga and meditation and prefers spending quality time with his family. Cricket is his another leisure interest. He had indeed played Ranji Trophy Tournament for Maharashtra. VM Cavale is a management consultant and has been teaching marketing and supply chain management at some of the leading business schools in India and abroad as a guest faculty. A graduate in mechanical engineering, he also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad. Vasant Cavale worked for almost three decades in the marketing, sales, distribution and logistics departments of the Unilever Group at senior levels both in India & abroad.
