A Must Read

Arneson's book is a must read! I knew it would be a well written, concise and compelling book as I have been a long time fan of Steve's articles in the online Leadership Examiner. Steve speaks from experience not only from the years of coaching others, but from his own personal development journey. Each idea, tool or exercise for development is outlined in a hard hitting, easy to read and pragmatic manner. It is organized so that one can easily refer back to the various sections and actually use it as a GPS for navigating development. Steve's practical approach is coupled with humor and wisdom. This book is for new leaders and seasoned veterans as keeping up with the world and the changing global conditions we face makes it impossible not to continually stretch ourselves to learn, grow and make a difference.

Practical...Enjoyable...Outstanding

Bootstrap Leadership is a practical, engaging compendium of steps we can all take to develop ourselves as leaders. It's easy to read as well as humorous and insightful. Steve Arneson does a great job taking high-level concepts and translating them into practical suggestions that we can easily apply to our own careers. Each chapter comes with 3-4 "Bootstrap Takeaways" that capture the key points so you can use them going forward.
Another great feature of Bootstrap Leadership is that the chapters don't necessarily need to be read in order. If you have an interest in a particular topic area you can read ahead and cover that issue without missing out for not having read prior chapters. Dr. Arneson also brings his suggestions to light using his own experiences (both good and bad) as examples. This personalizes the ideas and makes them resonate particularly well -- certainly more than in most business books I read.
If you're serious about developing your leadership skills and think you might be "looking at things the wrong way," then Bootstrap Leadership is a great buy. From how to assess your own strengths and weaknesses to how to build and manage a network, to how to connect with your employees in more meaningful ways...Bootstrap Leadership leads you step by step towards becoming a better leader.

Save $thousands - buy this book

I think it's great when someone like Steve Arneson writes a book. Here is a guy who C-level execs pay tens of thousands of dollars a year for advice and consultation about their leadership development. Because of this book, though, the rest of us can benefit from Arneson's insight - for a sum less than one good martini at a top steakhouse.
From the beginning, you know Arneson understands his subject and his audience. The self-evaluation at the beginning of the book leads to a self-prioritization of the 50 lessons to follow. Feeling mighty? Work on the 10 things you recognize as weaknesses. Feeling low? Read the chapters on the 30 things you know you do well and be self-affirmed. Just getting started? Start from the beginning and start to recognize your innate talents and areas for developmental focus. Regardless, you can use the self-test to get to the content that matters the most to you, right NOW. (Evidently Arneson does has some experience with A-type personalities...)
I like the way he uses stories from his career and the example of leaders he has witnessed to illustrate and prove his points. Storytelling is effective for at least one great reason: it gives us the "because." Whether the narrative is a mere setup for the "moral of the story" or draws a vivid picture of the cause and effect, Arneson's stories are an engaging means of getting his point across.
Don't assume that because the book has "leadership" in the title, that effective human interaction is the sum total of the lessons it holds. While there is much about that in the book, Arneson has a well-rounded view of the successful executive as yes, a leader of people, and a visionary with a thorough understanding of the business, its drivers, financials, competitors, risks and opportunities. Regardless of your blindspot or simple developmental opportunity, you'll find some ideas and actions to help you address it.
I'm often skeptical of books with "5 of this" or "21 of that" in their title, as a careful reading leaves me wondering whether there really are that many or whether the author stretched to hit the number or ignored additional nuance to make his/her editor happy. In this case, while there remains a bit of that skepticism, I am also hard-pressed to say which ones I might have combined or deleted - at least without comparing the relative heft of the chapters. And that feels like cheating. Also, if you're looking for a more prescriptive book - be this, don't be that - you'll probably be disappointed. Arneson is clearly committed to leadership as a voyage of self-discovery and meaning; this book aims to lead and equip us on that journey - not preempt it.
This is a book for your library that you'll pull down frequently - to share, to guide your reflection, to recharge your batteries. And that, my friends, makes it worth its weight in gold - let alone martinis.
