Excellent starter book for oxyacetylene!

There are so many books on welding that it is hard to figure out which one will be best for you, especially if you are a beginner.
One of the first things as a beginner is to start with oxyacetylene (gas) welding. The problem is that with most welding books, they try to focus on ALL welding forms and there is a lot of information that gets left out. For oxyacetylene welding, this is THE book. It's COMPLETE focus is on oxyacetylene. That's the bonus about this book, and it really comes across well for the beginner. If you don't know anthing about welding and want to start, buy this book! It's loaded with easy to follow instructions, practical tips, and great step-by-step procedures. It even goes into the physics and metals and thier properties in a down to earth, easy-to-comprehend way!
On the downside, the 10 easy-to-follow projects should have been chosen better because some are not applicable to the average welder (like a hay manger and farm gate).
Bottom line: When I read this book I was so pleased that I didn't put it down until I was finished. If you want to focus on oxyacetylene then this is the book for you.

Excellent beginner's text (at least) on welding.

I bought this book on the strength of previous reviews and absolutely no experience at welding, brazing, silver-soldering, silver-brazing, sweat-soldering, or any other metal-joining skill beyond electronics soldering. It was a good choice. The author covers his subject thoroughly, clearly knows much more than he can pack into this book, and is able to present it all in an understandable fashion. There may be other books aimed at welding specialties that cover them in greater depth than this book does; this can tell you enough to let you decide whether you need more info or not. There is enough here to enable a neophyte to select, intelligently, the equipment required to accomplish whatever project he is considering. The rest is practice. The only thing lacking in the text is minor: a single color section demonstrating the differences in flames for different purposes. That information is carried by black-and-white line drawings in this book. They may be enough; I would feel a bit better-informed with a color photo (or illustration, for that matter).

About the Author

Bobby Clark is director of men's and women's soccer at Stanford University, where he coached the men's varsity team to national runner-up in the NCAA Division I for 1998. A former coach of the New Zealand national team and for Dartmouth College, he began his coaching career while playing championship soccer in the Scottish professional league, when he served as youth coach for the Aberdeen Football Club. He honed his positive, teach-through-games approach to coaching soccer over a career that spans nearly 40 years. Bobby now lives on the Stanford campus with his wife, Betty. Their three children, Tommy, Jamie, and Jennifer, have all played or coached soccer professionally.

The first book you should buy on coaching soccer

Coach Clark tells you what you need to know, and how to make your players have fun. Which is why they're playing soccer, right?
We tried out Bobby Clark's methods starting halfway through a rather disappointing season, and saw it start to pay off within 4 weeks. Our kids stopped looking at the ball in games and started going after it instead, and they were clearly having more fun in practice. Even if you don't use exactly his drills - and he has some excellent ones - you can and should apply his philosophy.
This is a good book for anyone's soccer library, but is particularly helpful for new coaches and coaches of younger players.

Great book for beginner soccer coach

Recruited to help out with our town's first year in soccer, I ended up coaching the 1st & 2nd grade team. I knew nothing about soccer and this book helped me learn enough to keep ahead of that age level and give them fun drills to do each practice. I really liked how it was geared to the beginning coach and the younger player age levels.

The One Book You Should Have

This book is truly all inclusive for the new or beginning coach. If you have to pick just one book to help you coach soccer pick this one. I am getting a fairly large soccer library and this is the best I've seen as a teach everything book.

About the Author
Professor emeritus of operations research at Stanford University. Dr. Hillier is especially known for his classic, award-winning text, Introduction to Operations Research, co-authored with the late Gerald J. Lieberman, which has been translated into well over a dozen languages and is currently in its 8th edition. The 6th edition won honorable mention for the 1995 Lanchester Prize (best English-language publication of any kind in the field) and Dr. Hillier also was awarded the 2004 INFORMS Expository Writing Award for the 8th edition. His other books include The Evaluation of Risky Interrelated Investments, Queueing Tables and Graphs, Introduction to Stochastic Models in Operations Research, and Introduction to Mathematical Programming. He received his BS in industrial engineering and doctorate specializing in operations research and management science from Stanford University. The winner of many awards in high school and college for writing, mathematics, debate, and music, he ranked first in his undergraduate engineering class and was awarded three national fellowships (National Science Foundation, Tau Beta Pi, and Danforth) for graduate study. Dr. Hillier's research has extended into a variety of areas, including integer programming, queueing theory and its application, statistical quality control, and production and operations management. He also has won a major prize for research in capital budgeting. Mark Hillier Associate professor of quantitative methods at the School of Business at the University of Washington. Dr. Hillier received his BS in engineering (plus a concentration in computer science) from Swarthmore College, and he received his MS with distinction in operations research and PhD in industrial engineering and engineering management from Stanford University. As an undergraduate, he won the McCabe Award for ranking first in his engineering class, won election to Phi Beta Kappa based on his work in mathematics, set school records on the men's swim team, and was awarded two national fellowships (National Science Foundation and Tau Beta Pi) for graduate study. During that time, he also developed a comprehensive software tutorial package, OR Courseware, for the Hillier-Lieberman textbook, Introduction to Operations Research. As a graduate student, he taught a PhD-level seminar in operations management at Stanford and won a national prize for work based on his PhD dissertation. At the University of Washington, he currently teaches courses in management science and spreadsheet modeling.

Ronald B. Adler is Associate Professor of Communication at Santa Barbara City College, where he specializes in organizational and interpersonal communication. He is the author of Confidence in Communication: A Guide to Assertive and Social Skills and coauthor of Understanding Human Communication, Interplay: the Process of Interpersonal Communication as well as the widely used text Looking Out/Looking In. He is a consultant for a number of corporate, professional, and government clients and leads workshops in such areas as conflict resolution, presentational speaking, team building, and interviewing. Jeanne Marquardt Elmhorst has been involved in communication studies for over 15 years. She received her master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, then traveled and taught in Asia for three years, sparking her interest in intercultural communication. She has taught at the University of Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico.
