About the Author
Laura King did her undergraduate work at Kenyon College, where, an English major, she declared a second major, in psychology, during the second semester of her junior year. She completed her A.B. in English with high honors and distinction and in psychology with distinction in 1986. Laura then did graduate work at Michigan State University and the University of California, Davis, receiving her Ph.D. in personality psychology in 1991.

My second edition of a first-rate title

We use Laura King's text with our general psychology courses at State College of Florida. The Science of Psychology: An Appreciative View is written in a logical manner for both novice psychology students and experienced faculty to locate content. Her writing style is scientific, and she includes references in the text (which I appreciate as I talk to my students about citations...), but it is not so overly bogged down with in-text citations that it is impossible to navigate.
My students found (during a class test against other textbooks) King's writing style easier to read and examples were more relevant to their lives than other texts. The first edition was so wildly successful with our students that we looked forward to the update of the second edition, which includes a new (and much needed) chapter on gender and sexuality.
We have the textbook packaged with Connect, LearnSmart, and Tegrity. While we saw an improvement in our students' understanding of the material based upon King's writing style (and the amazing graphics and transparencies) in the text alone, changing our pedagogical style to incorporate Connect, LearnSmart, and Tegrity has resulted in a letter-grade improvement (on average) for our classes.
Another benefit of having these technologies packaged with the text is that I do less review in class of the text material. Students read their content before class because they need to complete their Connect assignments, which include videos, animations, PowerPoints, and other interactive media. In this way, students are prepared for lecture much more than they ever have been. We have more highly productive discussions that revolve around Connect content (i.e. why they couldn't get the behavioral technique they chose to work on their animated parrot to get him to ring a bell, etc.).
Students then go home after hearing lectures and review for exams using LearnSmart. It provides questions in multiple formats (i.e. multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, multi-answer, true-false, etc.), which better prepares students for exams.
Finally, students can review my lectures using Tegrity, which is the easiest-to-use podcasting program that I have ever encountering, especially considering the number of options that it offers students for viewing anything I put on the screen, searching keyterms, speeding and slowing speech, and so on.
I highly recommend Laura King's text, along with the ancillary package of materials, to any psychology program looking to see an improvement in student engagement and achievement.

Warning -- Kindle Version has low license limit

Warning to all Kindle users - this book appear to have a two device license limit. I discovered this when I downloaded it to my computer and phone and then tried to view in the browser-based cloud reader, only to receive a "License Limit Reached" error. Customer Service confirmed this to be the case.
The content of the book is great, but when the publisher limited the number of licenses to just 2 the portability is reduced significantly. Hopefully, Amazon will implement my suggestion to include this information on the product and purchasing pages so this does not surprise consumers.
Edit 1: According to http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200298470, the limit is posted on the details page. Can anyone find it on this page? I am not able to.

Great, but...

This book arrived in perfectly new condition but the Conncect access code DOES NOT come with the book! It costs another $10 online. If I were you, buy used, NOT new, and get the connect pass online. Or don't even buy a hard copy of the book - you can get it online with the access code for connect. But all in all this was a great book and wonderful service by the seller!
