About the Author
John B. Herbich, Ph.D., P.E. is Professor Emeritus Ocean and Civil Engineering, former Head of the Ocean Engineering Program and former Director of the Center for Dredging Studies at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. One of the leading experts in coastal and ocean engineering education and research in the world, Dr. Herbich is a Fellow and life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, and has served on panels and committees of the Marine Board, the National Research Council, Academy of Sciences, and is on the board of directors of the Western Dredging Association. He has written more than 200 professional reports and papers, and is also the author or editor of the Handbook of Dredging Engineering; Handbook of Coastal and Ocean Engineering; Seafloor Scour: Design Guidelines for Ocean-Founded Structures; Offshore Pipelines: Design Elements; and Coastal and Deep Ocean Dredging. Dr. Herbich received the prestigious International Coastal Engineering Award in 1993 from the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the Dredge of the Year Award in 1995 from the Western Dredging Association.

One of those bricks to support your career

Seriously, it is thick as a brick, and it is full of facts and formulas and practical advice for engineers. But you should not use this book instead of an engineer--it starts at a too high level. For instance, if you are looking for simple wave equations, look elsewhere. But if coastal engineering is your future, buy this book, borrow it, steal it, whatever you have to do, just get it. I only give it 4 stars since it may loose some readers due to its rather high entry level. But of course, the price suggests that it is an expert book.

About the Author
Gilbert H. Muller, who received a Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Stanford University, is currently professor of English and Special Assistant to the President at the LaGuardia campus of the City University of New York. He has also taught at Stanford University, Vassar College, and several universities overseas. Dr. Muller is the author of the award-winning Nightmares and Visions: Flannery O'Connor and the Catholic Grotesque, Chester Himes , and other critical studies. His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, The New Republic, The Nation, The Sewanee Review, The Georgia Review, and elsewhere. He is also a noted author and editor of textbooks in English and composition, including The Short Prose Reader with Harvey Wiener, and with John A Williams, The McGraw-Hill Introduction to Literature, Bridges: Literature across Cultures, and Ways In: Reading and Writing about Literature. Among Dr. Muller's awards are National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, a Fulbright Fellowship, and a Mellon Fellowship. Harvey S. Wiener is currently affiliated with Marymount Manhattan College after serving as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Adelphi University. Previously University Dean for Academic Affairs, the City University of New York, he was founding president of the Council of Writing Program Administrators. Dr. Wiener is the author of many books on reading and writing for college students and their teachers, including The Writing Room (Oxford, 1981). He is co-author of The McGraw-Hill College Handbook, a reference grammar and rhetoric text. Dr. Wiener has chaired the Teaching of Writing Division of the Modern Language Association (1987). He has taught writing at every level of education from elementary school to graduate school. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Brooklyn College, he holds a Ph.D. in Renaissance literature. Dr. Wiener has won grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and the Exxon Education Foundation.

Uniform Drawing Format Manual: New Cadd and Drafting Standar

Although the idea is good, the execution of this national standards review misses the mark. Mr. Stitt was unfortunate to have based his overview on an outdated model. All of the information I reviewed fails to reflect the current AIA and CSI documents, despite a copyright date later than the current national standards. The level of detail is inadequate for providing standard guidelines suitable to assure compliance.

Very Poorly Edited Book!

I have read several books authored by Mr. Stitt - however, this particular book was especially poorly edited. The content of the book itself was fine and useful.
I found it ironic that a book dedicated to elevating the precision and accuracy of architectural construction documents would be burdened with so many spelling errors, repeat sentences, slang comments (I guess to give some personality to the author) and out of context information. The book was difficult to read because the errors were so distracting.
I can only speculate that either the book was published in haste and not edited at all prior to printing; to save money, 3rd graders were hired to edit the book (paid with candy and lunch money); or, Mr. Stitt has become very sloppy with age.
All said, the previous books I have read by Mr. Stitt have been masterful in presentation and content. This book is a huge disappointment!

Necessary Uniformity

Let me start with the only problem with this book. Because of its size and binding method, it is next to impossible to lay the book open on the desk as a continuous reference manual. As for the material and Cadd formatting, the book provides a necessary outline of layering and naming that closely follows what has already been programmed in the software. What makes this book such an important refence manual is the clarity with which it address each profession involved on a job. By providing the standard with which all professions can easily read and translate into their work, the book easilly pays for itself by clarifying the ambiguity of what information is necessary and where does it belong.

Great Book for OB as well as HR

I bought this for a basic org behavior class that I had last year. The class wasn't that great, but the book is really well written. It's extremely thorough despite the wide range of information that it covers. I just took a basic HR class and when studying for the exams, I actually pulled this one out and looked up concepts that the HR book just glazed over. This was one of the most expensive books I've ever purchased (back then it was $170), but it's also the only one I have consistently used once the class was over. Definitely a keeper.

Easy to understand

I liked this textbook because it was easy to understand. There were alot of good examples and the language was very straight forward, it wasn't filled with technical terms (unless they were defined). I think that it was overpriced, especially for the Kindle version. I bought the hardback so that I could recoup some of my costs at the end of the semester but I would have preferred a cheaper Kindle version to begin with.

I recommend "Numerical Methods for Engineers" as textbook

I teach Numerical Methods at undergraduate level in Mexico, and I have used "Numerical Methods for Engineers" during several years.
I like this book because of its approach to learning: each part contains Motivation, Mathematical Background and Orientation, then the numerical methods and finally an Epilogue.
Also, the number and variety of the problems presented contribute to accomplish our educational objectives, and the emphasis made on the growing use of software packages (MATLAB, Excel, Mathcad and IMSL) makes this book more useful for students and instructors.
This is an extensive book (more than 900 pages) and perhaps some parts of it must be omitted during a normal course (4 months, 4 hours per week in our case).
I think that the book price of the English edition (Hardcover) is high. Fortunately for our students, there is a cheaper Spanish version, although the translation is not very good (not in the technical sense but in writing and style).
In conclusion, I recommend the book to students and instructors as a comprehensive, learning oriented text with many problems in several engineering areas, and emphasis on the use of software packages, suitable to be used as textbook of numerical methods with extensive use of software.

Numerical Methods made easy

I bought this book a little while ago to get more familiar with interpolation which I need to use in some of the signal analysis software that I write. As I was reading through the book I suddenly realized the overall usefulness of numerical methods in general. It has helped me code up routines for solving matrices and interpolation algorithms. After reading this book I really can not understand how courses in linear algebra and differential equations can be taught without extensive use of numerical methods.

This book has really opened my eyes to a whole new way of solving engineering problems.

As a textbook?

I've noticed several reviewers have benifited from this book as a reference for algorithms in specific topics, which is something the book is really good at in my opinion.

However, we studied the book as a junior level textbook in numerical methods and went into many problems in doing so. Although the motiviation is well, the presentation is not. For example, the parts on Fourier Approximation (Chapter 19), and Finite Difference: Elliptic Equations (Chapter 29) really do require good background knowledge on behalf of the reader, and the authors sometimes rush into the approximation techniques with hardly any explination of the underlying logic.

For undergraduate students, I don't believe this book is good for self-teaching. More elaboration is needed in the derivations of the nemurical techniques, and without that, many of us were lost when it came to homeworks and computer projects.

On the bright side, The graphs are excellent , and the book covers a very wide range of topics and presents many codes and worked out examples.

Great text, great problems, great all around book

This text is for use in an undergrad course or an early grad course. It is written very clearly and has LOTS of problems. These authors' problems fit along perfectly with the text; the examples lead to the early problems and the earlier problems lead smoothly to the more advanced problems. I am very pleased with this text and its clear setup, and I have been using it for self-study. I hardly miss the teacher!

Better for Engineering, Physics, and others in the Applied areas, than for pure mathematics students

This is a nice book for understanding the basic concepts of early Complex Analysis. The integral formulas, residue theorems, Fourier Analysis, infinite series/sequences, etc. are all covered. There are plenty of exercises and examples. Everything is so clearly presented, that it is easy for people with very little background in analysis to read (ie, you don't really need real analysis before reading this book).

My problems with the book are thus: There are very, very few proofs to any of the theorems. I'd rather have more proofs than examples. The problems are almost all computational. Almost none of the exercises require much thought, although some of them will take a while to do. There is no discussion on the importance of certain topics to the wider context of math. No discussion of certain standard complex-valued functions like elliptic functions, zeta functions, or gamma functions.

If anything, I see this as mostly a how-to book for engineers and physicists who come across complex variables in their work. For math students, I'd recommend the books by Shakarchi/Stein, Lang, Conway, Ahlfors.

If you like a well written, applied, operational kind book.

If you like mathematics but prefer an operational approach instead of the abstract approach, you will like this book.

An ideal complement to Calculus books (like Piskunov, Thomas Jr., etc.) that do not emphasize Complex Variables.

Clear explanations. Many examples. Relatively fast to read, that is, you will not stop the reading trying to demonstrate those boring "easy to show statements".
