"There is nothing permanent except change," advised Heraclitus of Greece in 513 B.C. Project Management: Strategic Design and Implementation, Fourth Edition, by David I. Cleland and Lewis R. Ireland, provides contemporary evidence that both change and improvement are the natural order of things in project management literature. This new edition contains much of the content of the previous and a whole new look and feel. Its design follows the format of the authors' previous collaborative success, Project Manager's Portable Handbook, with decimally numbered paragraphs for structure and bullet lists for detail. This form of layout and presentation results in content that is modularly organized and easily accessible for readers. The authors have improved individual chapters by adding a brief introduction that outlines the central points of the chapter and warms up readers for what follows. Each chapter now concludes with four additional sections: a listing of additional sources of information in the form of a generously annotated bibliography; a listing of project management principles that summarize chapter content in pithy statements of enduring, universal value; a project management situation--a brief, descriptive case study that illuminates chapter content by way of a practical example; and a student/reader assignment that offers food for thought, discussion, or investigation. In whole, the book comprises 22 chapters divided into seven parts that march progressively forward from history through current practice to a view of the future. This new edition provides a guiding graphic that appears at the head of each chapter as a structural map showing readers where they are and maintaining a sense of global reference throughout their journey through the text. In a very general way, the content of this edition follows closely that of the previous edition, as most sequential editions do. This this is no mere tweaking of text to generate a more current publication date and perhaps rejuvenate sagging sales. It is a significant improvement in both form -- described above -- and substance. The authors have rearranged technical material in places to make it more logical and readable and updated references throughout to make them more relevant to readers and reflective of recent research. The chapter on strategic issues in project management is a good example. The old material is still there, but newly designed with headings, bullets, and graphics that are more appealing in appearance and more facilitating in function. Bringing things up to date, the authors have added a timely discussion of project portfolio management and references to 10 articles as recent as June 2001. Cleland and Ireland have combined previous separate chapters on project organization charting and authority into a single chapter that presents a complete integrated view of these interrelated topics. They also have recast the previous chapter on working with project teams as a discussion of effective project teamwork that is more action oriented and that prescribes specific steps to take when building project teams. A new and much needed chapter addresses project management maturity. The authors briefly discuss the history of maturity models, specific models developed by the Software Engineering Institute and by the Federal Aviation Administration, and two general approaches to model development. They provide a tool for assessing project management maturity and describe the contributing roles of benchmarking and business intelligence. While no cookbook solution to maturity management currently exists, the information in this chapter leaves readers well informed and well armed to deal with this important emerging issue on their own as individual project needs demand. Another welcome addition is a separate chapter on earned value management systems (EVMS). Unlike texts that limit discussion of earned value to syntax and formulas, Cleland and Ireland address concepts, meaning, and application concisely and completely. They temper the unique and essential utility of EVMS with the candid and practical observation that it is not a tool for all projects. It requires a rigorous detailed plan and disciplined management processes. A poorly defined project will condemn an EVMS effort to frustration and failure. Project Management: Strategic Design and Implementation, Fourth Edition, is not the last word on project management theory and practice. Given the evolutionary nature of the domain, such a book probably will never be written. He resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. LEWIS R. IRELAND is a Fellow of the Project Management Institute and has received the Institute's Distinguished Constribution Award, Person of the Year Award, and many certificates of appreciation. He has more than three decades of management experience and has focused intensely on managing projects and supporting organizational change to project-based enterpise for the past 22 years. Dr. Ireland is active in advancing the project management discipline through participation in professional associations. He is a 20-year veteran of the Project Management Institute and served as its President and Chair in 1998. About the Author
Steven L. McShane is Winthrop Professor of Management at the University of Western Australia (UWA) Business School, where he receives high teaching ratings from students in Perth, Singapore, Manila, and other cities where UWA offers its programs. He previously taught in the business faculties at Simon Fraser University and Queen's University in Canada. Steve has conducted executive programs with Nokia, TUV-SUD, Wesfarmers Group, Main Roads WA, McGraw-Hill, ALCOA World Alumina Australia, and many other organizations. He is also a popular visiting speaker, having given numerous invited presentations over the past four years to faculty and students in the United States, China, India, Canada, the Philippines, Malaysia, and other countries. Steve earned his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in organizational behavior, human resource management, and labor relations. He also holds a Master of Industrial Relations from the University of Toronto, and an undergraduate degree from Queen's University in Canada. Steve is a past President of the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada (the Canadian equivalent of the Academy of Management) and Director of Graduate Programs in the business faculty at Simon Fraser University. Along with coauthoring Organizational Behavior, Sixth Edition, Steve is coauthor of M: Organizational Behavior (2012) with Mary Ann Von Glinow; Organisational Behaviour on the Pacific Rim, Third Edition (2010) with Mara Olekahns (University of Melbourne) and Tony Travaglione (Curtin University); and Canadian Organizational Behaviour, Eighth Edition (2013) with Sandra Steen (University of Regina). Steve is also coauthor of editions or translations of his organizational behavior book in China, India, Quebec, Taiwan, and Brazil. Steve has published several dozen articles and conference papers on workplace values, training transfer, organizational learning, exit-voice-loyalty, employee socialization, wrongful dismissal, media bias in business magazines, ad diverse topics. Steve enjoys spending his leisure time swimming, body board surfing, canoeing, skiing, and traveling with his wife and two daughters. Director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) and Professor of Management and International Business at Florida International University. Previously on the Business School faculty of the University of Southern California, she has an MBA and PhD in Management Science from The Ohio State University. Great Book for OB as well as HR

I bought this for a basic org behavior class that I had last year. The class wasn't that great, but the book is really well written. It's extremely thorough despite the wide range of information that it covers. I just took a basic HR class and when studying for the exams, I actually pulled this one out and looked up concepts that the HR book just glazed over. This was one of the most expensive books I've ever purchased (back then it was $170), but it's also the only one I have consistently used once the class was over. Definitely a keeper.

Easy to understand

I liked this textbook because it was easy to understand. There were alot of good examples and the language was very straight forward, it wasn't filled with technical terms (unless they were defined). I think that it was overpriced, especially for the Kindle version. I bought the hardback so that I could recoup some of my costs at the end of the semester but I would have preferred a cheaper Kindle version to begin with.

This is an easy to read book for introductory Organizational Behavior students. It clearly outlines objectives for each chapter and has key terms bolded and defined in the margins. At the end of every chapter there are practice questions to help students take away the necessary information and focus on what is most important. If you're on the fence about buying it for your class or not, I recommend buying it because it's got some great info in there that you may find useful beyond the classroom.

Jack Clark Francis, Ph.D., is Professor of Economics and Finance at Bernard Baruch College in New York, He previously worked for the Federal Reserve and has written several textbooks on investments published by McGraw-Hill.

Richard W. Taylor, Ph.D., is Professor of Finance at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and has published papers in journals like The Financial Review, Financial Analysts Journal, and The Journal of Portfolio Management.

A Gem for Supplemental Studies

Schaum's Outlines consistently provide good topical studies. I have read several of their finance and accounting books to supplement my CFA curriculum studies. The "solved problems" present a myriad of practical questions / scenarios, followed by detailed solutions. I consider this format a great way to learn!

INVESTMENTS helps round out a finance students' or investment professionals' understanding of a variety of concepts.

The book excels at presenting topical material in an orderly way. Chapters nicely segue into others. Authors Francis and Taylor's early chapters cover various financial instruments (money market securities, common and preferred stock, corporate bonds, US securities, municipal bonds) and then progress to the financial environment in which these instruments operate.

The book explores financial statement analysis, portfolio management and analysis and also specific applications of short positions, hedging, arbitrage, security valuation, put and call options, and capital market theory.

I give this book a 4-star rating instead of 5 because the end-of-chapter problems (true false and multiple choice) are not supplemented with detailed explanations to the correct answer. This being said, I give much credit to the effectiveness of the Solved Problems throughout the book. They are practical and have enhanced my understanding of topics.

The book could be improved if the authors would provide problem-solving guidance using financial calculators. I use an HP 12-C calculator extensively and perhaps had an easier time solving problems with it rather than mulling through the algebraic formulas.

All in all, for the serious CFA candidate or student of investments, I highly recommend this book for supplemental reading. I've learned a lot and hope you do too!

Good introduction to the beginning student of investment

This book gives an excellent elementary introduction to investment techniques and concepts for the beginning student of business or economics. It is full of useful examples and solved problems as is characteristic of all books in this series, and it also gives adequate explanation of the terms and results in most areas of investment activity. Some of the parts of the book which are particularly well-written or helpful include: 1. The diagram of the corporate bond rating process . 2. The flowchart detailing a primary offering made through a syndicate of investment bankers. 3. The summary of the different security market indices. 4. The discussion of the "naive buy-and-hold strategy" and their use as benchmarks against which other investment strategies may be compared. 5. The discussion of the Dupont framework for analyzing equity returns and growth to reveal the sources of the growth of the firm. 6. The discussion of time-series comparisons for the ratios of a firm. 7. The discussion of the various problems involved when doing financial statement analysis. 8. The discussion on arbitrage. 9. The treatment of moving averages and the accompanying illustration of different moving averages. 10. The discussion of the random walk theory in the context of the efficient markets theory. The random walk theory has been been taken to be axiomatic by most financial analysts but has recently been challenged recently by empirical studies of financial data. 11. The treatment of the different levels of market efficiency, including the weakly efficient, the semistrong efficient, and the strongly efficient market hypotheses. 12. The discussion of the anomalies in market data that point to deviations from the efficient market hypothesis. 13. The chapter on portfolio analysis via the use of covariance and the treatment of the efficient frontier. 14. The treatment of the capital asset pricing model.

About the Author
Diane E. Papalia As a professor, Diane E. Papalia has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her bachelor's degree, majoring in psychology, from Vassar College and both her master's degree in child development and family relations and her Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. She has published numerous articles in such professional journals as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Journal of Gerontology. Most of these papers have dealt with her major research focus, cognitive development from childhood through old age. She is especially interested in intelligence in old age and factors that contribute to the maintenance of intellectual functioning in late adulthood. She is a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. She is the coauthor, with Sally Wendkos Olds and Ruth Duskin Feldman, of A Child's World, now in its eighth edition; of Psychology with Sally Wendkos Olds; and of Adult Development and Aging, with Cameron J. Camp and Ruth Duskin Feldman. Sally Wendkos Olds is an award-winning professional writer who has written more than 200 articles in leading magazines and is the author or coauthor of six books addressed to general readers in addition to the three textbooks she has coauthored with Dr. Papalia. Her book The Complete Book of Breastfeeding , a classic since its publication in 1972, was reissued in 1999 in a completely updated and expanded edition; more than 2 million copies are in print. She is also the author of The Working Parents' Survival Guide and The Eternal Garden: Seasons of Our Sexuality and the coauthor of Raising a Hyperactive Child (winner of the Family Service Association of America National Media Award) and Helping Your Child Find Values to Live By. She has spoken widely on the topics of her books and articles to both professional and lay audiences, in person and on television and radio. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in English literature and minored in psychology. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was graduated summa cum laude. Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and seventh editions of Human Development and the eighth edition of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr.Papalia and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. International version is NOT the same

The exercises and case studies are different than the US edition. A lot of teachers will not allow you to use this book in school. Yes, you can buy this book for $17.00 but it is only a great deal if you knew what you were buying. I paid $65.99 for the US version from Harrysbookstore on Ebay. I was thrilled because my school sells this same book for $140.00. You can imagine how angry I was to have this cheap unacceptable version shipped to me. Now I am stuck with it and He will not give me a refund.

Much less expensive than the hardcover

I bought this paperback version and it is EXACTLY the same as the hardcover version with the different picture on the cover but a lot less expensive. My classmates were all amazed at how much money I saved buying the international edition.

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation. Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean's Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School's finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. He has been consultant to a number of corporations, including AT&T, Mobil Oil and Pacific Enterprises, as well as to the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Justice and Labor, and the State of California.

Nearly identical to Corporate Finance 8th Edition ISBN 0073337180.

This International version nearly identical to US book Corporate Finance 8th Edition ISBN 0073337180. I was supposed to have the US book for my class and mistakenly bought this one. I compared my book to a classmates and the only differences I found were in the problems. Rather than an American company name like Irrigation Specialists and money in $'s, the problem would read Broslofski and money is in Euros. So if you want to save money, I recommend buying the international version.

solid introduction

we use this book in an undergraduate finance course. I believe that it was adequate to be used as material for students that have to go through their first encounter with business finance. The topics were well explained, with a set of examples to underline relevant aspects of financial formulas.

I would like to briefly explain our purpose in authoring this prescription manual. Every year, there are 7,000-10,000 deaths reported in the United States due to prescription errors. There are a number of reasons why the administration of medications has become so complex. These include polypharmacy (patients on many medications at the same time), the rapid volume and fast pace of today's clinical practices, the dizzying array of new and complicated drugs on the market and the loss of the "family pharmacist" that knows patients and their medications personally. Our main objective in creating the book is to provide the most essential information on commonly prescribed drugs in an easy to use, pocket sized(large pocket!)edition. This book is the only one of it's kind written by experts in pharmacology and clinical practice. I am an MD in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago and have a busy clinical practice and also teach and do clinical research. My father, Dr. Seymour Ehrenpreis, is a PhD in Biochemistry and Pharmacology, who not only adds a basic scientist's knowledge to the information provided but has also taught thousands of medical students the art of drug prescription. Our Advisory Board consists of 17 clinicians ranging from Professors of Medicine in a variety of specialties from several medical schools, a physician's assistant with the US Army, a microbiologist and a clinical psychologist. These individuals have all worked carefully to glean the most important and essential information needed to safely and properly prescribe about 500 drugs including over 900 trade names from a clinician's prospective. Areas covered for each entry include drug name,brand names,mechanism of action,susceptible organisms(for antibiotics,doses and indications,adjustment of dose in liver and kidney diseases,the elderly and children,timing with meals,use during pregnancy and lactation (with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics when available),contraindications, warnings and precautions,very detailed advice to patients for avoiding adverse reactions and other drug related problems,common and serious side effects,clinically important drug interactions, parameters for the clinicians to monitor to avoid complications and finally, editorial comments. The editorial comments are "pearls of wisdom" that the authors or our Advisory panel have added to assist the prescriber. Aside from the aforementioned advantages of this book,a number of drugs which are either not included in or are only briefly mentioned in the PDR 2001 edition are described in detail in our book. Many of these drugs, such as IV nitroglycerine,dopamine,and methylprednisolone to name just a few, are commonly prescribed. Useful but a little disappointing

Perhaps I didn't get this correctly but this book didn't really live up to my expectations.

I did learn some stuff from it and have used some of it since, but I actually expected a little more from it.

Possibly I was expecting a little too much. If you are after something that will tell you some of the basics of working with flip charts, designs of flip charts and a little bit about the type of hardware then this is a good one.

If you are after something that will help you to create dynamic sessions, push the limits of visual aids, and drive people into more thoughtful training sessions then this book is only partly useful.

The Best one there is

Don't even consider any other flip chart book, they don't come close. This one has it all.. designing flip charts, arranging them, writing them, making them visually interesting. Tons of useful and helpful information.
This book, together with Picture's Worth 1,000 Words: A Workbook for Visual Communications by Jean Westcott and Jennifer Hammond Landau are all you need to become an effective visual communicator, even if you can't draw anything! If you think you're just not good with flip charts, buy these two and prepare to amaze yourself with the transformation!

Excellent Product

As an instructor I look for many products that will assist myself and participants of my train-the-trainer workshops. Although I've purchased and used other flip chart reference information, I found the BIG BOOK of FLIP CHARTS to me informative, well illustrated and to the point. I puchased 5 copies and would recommend it to anyone in the training field that uses flip charts. The cover was also very colorful and gave great insight on what was inside.
